27-12-2024 (BANGKOK) Thai authorities have detained 20 foreign women who were allegedly soliciting customers along Pattaya’s famous beachfront. The sweep came in response to mounting complaints from local residents and tourists about provocatively dressed women approaching visitors under the beach’s palm trees.
The joint operation, conducted on Wednesday evening, involved Tourist Police, Immigration officials, and officers from the Social Development and Human Security Department. Leading the raid was Senior Inspector Pol. Lt. Col. Piyapong Ensan, alongside colleagues from Tourist Police Station 4.
Among those arrested were nine Ugandan nationals, eight Uzbek citizens, two women from Madagascar, and one Rwandan national, with ages spanning from 26 to 51 years. All detainees reportedly admitted to working as sex workers in the popular resort city.
“This operation reflects our commitment to maintaining Pattaya’s reputation as a family-friendly holiday destination, particularly as we approach the New Year celebrations,” a senior police official told reporters. “We cannot allow such activities to tarnish our image as a premier tourist destination.”
The women face charges under Thailand’s Prostitution Prevention and Suppression Act of 1996, specifically Section 5, which prohibits public solicitation. Following their arrest, the suspects were transferred to the Chonburi Social Welfare Department for processing and fining.
Immigration authorities have initiated proceedings to revoke the women’s visas and deport them from Thailand. The crackdown is part of a broader initiative to clean up Pattaya’s image, long associated with its notorious nightlife.
Local business owners have welcomed the operation. “This sends a clear message that Pattaya is serious about changing its reputation,” said a beachfront hotel manager who requested anonymity. “We want tourists to come here for our beautiful beaches and culture, not illegal activities.”
