2-10-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) Tesla has marked its entry into the Malaysian market by opening its first centre in the country, aiming to provide a comprehensive customer experience. This two-storey facility, developed in two phases, is a significant step towards introducing Tesla electric vehicles (EVs) to Malaysian consumers.
The first phase of the centre comprises a retail area showcasing the latest Tesla EV models. The second phase, expected to begin once the initial batch of Tesla vehicles is delivered to customers by the end of the year, will expand the centre to offer service, delivery, and after-sales support facilities.
The newly opened centre offers more than just vehicle displays. It features a spacious open workspace, a customer lounge, a staff cafeteria, and an auditorium capable of accommodating up to 250 individuals. Moreover, the centre is equipped with eight 250kW DC superchargers and 12 22kW AC chargers, reserved for the company’s internal use.
The centre’s launch was attended by distinguished guests, including Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, Selangor Investment, Trade, and Mobility committee chairman Ng Sze Han, Tesla regional director Isabel Fan, and other VIPs.
Isabel Fan highlighted that the centre is Tesla’s first in Malaysia and announced that the company plans to establish more similar centres across the country in the near future. She emphasized Tesla’s commitment to accelerating Malaysia’s transition to sustainable energy by delivering a seamless Tesla ownership experience.
Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz stressed that Tesla’s direct presence in Malaysia aligns with the country’s New Industrial Master Plan 2030, which aims to advance the manufacturing industry’s technological capabilities and strive for net-zero carbon emissions. He expressed confidence that Tesla’s presence would facilitate knowledge transfer, enhance the capabilities of local SMEs contributing to the Tesla ecosystem, and create high-skilled, well-paying jobs for the Malaysian workforce.
The minister also highlighted the global growth of electric vehicle (EV) sales, which surpassed 10 million units last year, capturing a notable 14% of the entire new vehicle market. Malaysia’s government has set ambitious targets for EV adoption, with the goal of EVs constituting 15% of the Total Industry Volume by 2030, rising to 38% by 2040, and reaching 80% by 2050.
