16-7-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that Malaysia will witness the creation of thousands of high-value and skilled job opportunities through investments by Tesla and SpaceX. Anwar revealed that Elon Musk, the founder and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has agreed to make substantial investments in the country, including establishing a Tesla office in Cyberjaya.
Despite their meeting taking place via video conference, Anwar described the discussions with Musk as fruitful and promising. He added that Musk has also expressed a desire to collaborate with the Malaysian government, specifically involving SpaceX, the satellite internet service Starlink, and electric vehicles (EV). Additionally, three Malaysian companies will be involved in the project with SpaceX, further strengthening the partnership.
Anwar expressed his excitement about Musk’s intention to visit Malaysia soon, believing that the visit will enhance the country’s image among foreign investors. During the Budget 2024 engagement session, Anwar highlighted the increase in electric vehicle production through Tesla Inc. He also emphasized the importance of Starlink, Musk’s venture aimed at providing affordable and competitive internet access, particularly in remote areas, to eliminate inequality.
Anwar praised Malaysia for being an early supporter of SpaceX, even preceding Western countries in their support for the company established in 2009. Musk expressed his appreciation for Malaysia’s confidence in SpaceX, which was a decision made by the previous leadership.
Starlink, the satellite broadband service developed by SpaceX, is currently available in 32 countries. The virtual conference meeting between Anwar and Musk lasted 25 minutes and included the participation of SpaceX senior director Lauren Dreyer, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, and Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
