30-7-2024 (JAKARTA) Tensions flared once again in Indonesia’s Papua region as the Free Papua Movement (OPM), led by the Egianus Kogoya group, attempted to disrupt security in the Yigi District of Nduga Regency, Papua Mountains Province. The incident, which occurred on Friday, 26th July 2024, prompted swift action from the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) Task Force.
According to a statement released by Lieutenant General TNI Richard Tampubolon of Penkogabwilhan III on Tuesday, security forces observed a group of OPM members, at least one of whom was armed, advancing towards the TNI Task Force Post in Yigi Village. In response to this potential threat, the security apparatus mobilised quickly to secure the area, successfully repelling the OPM group from the district.
The confrontation resulted in one OPM member, identified as Engabub, being fatally shot by officers, while two others sustained injuries. The identities of the wounded individuals are currently under investigation by the security forces’ Investigation Team.
Lt. Gen. Tampubolon emphasised the necessity of the operation, stating, “The resolute action taken by the Joint Apparatus in securing Yigi Village is crucial to maintaining stability and fostering accelerated development in the Papua region.”
In the aftermath of the incident, community leaders from Yigi Village approached the TNI Task Force Post to voice their concerns about the OPM’s disruptive activities. During their meeting with security personnel, these leaders sought assistance in addressing the ongoing disturbances caused by the separatist group.
One community leader implored, “The OPM remains undeterred in their efforts to destabilise Yigi. We urge you to protect our district from their interference.” The village representatives also expressed their unwavering support for the security forces’ presence in the area.
