2-4-2024 (TAIPEI) Taiwan’s Defence Minister, Chiu Kuo Cheng, has expressed regret and committed to staying in his position amidst an ongoing inquiry into his son’s alleged involvement in a sex scandal.
The decision to decline Chiu’s resignation came after revelations emerged on Thursday (Mar. 28) regarding his son, who works at the National Security Bureau (NSB), being accused of soliciting sex workers and producing pornographic content, as reported by Taipei Times. Consequently, the NSB promptly initiated an investigation into the matter.
On Mar. 28, Chiu publicly apologised for the “difficulties faced by the team due to family issues.” Presidential Office spokesperson Olivia Lin disclosed that Chiu verbally offered his resignation to President Tsai Ing Wen over the accusations, which Tsai ultimately refused.
The Ministry of National Defence (MND) issued a statement affirming Chiu’s compliance with the president’s directive, who “encouraged him to maintain his position during the transitional period of government,” Taipei Times reported. The transition will see President-elect William Lai Ching Te succeed Tsai at the conclusion of her second term on May 20.
Chiu addressed the media on Apr. 1, expressing remorse for his son’s actions. Focus Taiwan noted his direct apology to the NSB for the resources and time invested in investigating the allegations. Chiu also stated that he had advised his son to take responsibility for his conduct and accept any punishment deemed appropriate by the NSB.
Despite the family’s private matters, Chiu assured reporters that he would continue fulfilling his duties in his capacity as Defence Minister. Taiwan News reported that Tsai informed Chiu that his son would be subject to investigation in accordance with the law.
