3-2-2025 (TAIPEI) Taiwanese entertainment industry was plunged into mourning yesterday as beloved actress Barbie Hsu, famously known for her role in the hit series “Meteor Garden”, passed away at the age of 48 during a family holiday in Japan.
The shocking news was confirmed by her sister, prominent television host Dee Hsu, through her manager early this morning. “My kind and beloved sister departed from us due to complications arising from influenza during our New Year family trip to Japan,” the statement read. “I am forever grateful to have been her sister and will cherish her memory always.”
The actress, who rose to prominence in the early 2000s, had reportedly been enjoying life away from the spotlight in recent weeks. Just ten days before her passing, Hsu was spotted in high spirits at a wedding celebration, accompanied by her current husband, South Korean musician DJ Koo.
Sources close to the family indicate that Hsu had been battling health complications for some time. The actress previously disclosed her struggles with epilepsy, which was particularly affected by common colds, leading her to maintain a low public profile in recent years.
The news initially circulated on social media, causing widespread concern among fans and industry colleagues alike. Despite numerous attempts by local media to obtain additional information, family members and close associates have remained largely silent, with even long-time friend Chen Jianzhou declining to comment on the situation.
