31-7-2023 (BEIJING) A Malaysian sun bear at a zoo in Hangzhou, China, has been the subject of much speculation on Chinese social media, with many visitors believing that it was a person dressed up in a bear costume. The bear, which is four years old, was observed standing upright, with its backside displaying wrinkles that some visitors thought looked like clothing creases.
The zoo has confirmed that the bear is, in fact, a real Malaysian sun bear and not a person in a costume. The bear, which is the smallest bear species and can grow up to 1.5 meters in length, is known for its interaction with visitors. When the bear is lying down, its skin appears taut, but when it stands upright, its legs straighten out, which causes the skin on its backside to wrinkle.
The zoo stated that the bear’s appearance may have been mistaken for a person in a costume because of its small size and human-like posture. The zoo also pointed out that it would be impossible for a person to wear a costume in the current hot weather conditions in Hangzhou, which have reached nearly 40 degrees Celsius.
The bear has become a viral sensation on Chinese social media, with many visitors flocking to the zoo to see the bear standing on its hind legs. The zoo has urged visitors to respect the bear’s space and to refrain from getting too close.
