19-5-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) The suspect who was fatally shot after launching an assault on the Ulu Tiram police station has no ties to the terrorist organisation Jemaah Islamiah (JI), clarified Tan Sri Razarudin Husain.
The Inspector-General of Police initially suggested a connection between the suspect and JI, referencing information about the suspect’s father’s involvement with the group. “Our records indicated that the suspect’s 62-year-old father was affiliated with JI,” he explained.
“However, further investigations have revealed that the suspect himself was not associated with any terrorist group, including JI,” Razarudin stated during a phone interview on Saturday, 18 May.
Authorities are continuing to probe the motives behind the attack, which resulted in the deaths of two police officers. “The investigation is ongoing to determine what drove the suspect to commit this act,” Razarudin added.
Earlier, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail confirmed that the assailant acted independently when he stormed the Ulu Tiram police station, killing two officers and wounding another before being shot dead.
“Interrogations of over 40 individuals and an extensive search of the suspect’s residence confirmed that he acted alone,” Saifuddin said. “Our investigation commenced immediately following the incident, including thorough checks of profiles and police databases for similar cases.”
Saifuddin provided additional insights during a press conference at the Johor police headquarters. “We have interviewed a total of 46 individuals to aid in our investigation,” he noted. “Early findings indicate that the attack was carried out by a lone wolf. He was motivated by personal reasons that remain unclear, as he was known to be quite reclusive.”
