13-2-2024 (NEW YORK) Tragedy struck a subway station in the Bronx borough of New York City as gunfire erupted, resulting in one fatality and five individuals sustaining injuries. The New York Police Department (NYPD) reported that six people were shot during the incident.
As of now, the NYPD has not made any arrests in connection with the shooting, and the condition of the injured victims remains uncertain. Local media, citing police sources who wished to remain anonymous, revealed that the injuries sustained by the five individuals were not life-threatening.
Statistics indicate that crime on New York City’s subway system is relatively infrequent. On an average weekday, approximately 3.8 million trips are taken on the subway, and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority recorded a total of 570 felony assaults throughout 2023.
Shootings, in particular, are exceedingly rare occurrences. The last mass shooting incident on the subway system took place in 1984 when a man armed with a handgun injured ten people on a train passing through Brooklyn.
In a separate incident in May 2022, an unprovoked attack aboard a Q train led to the tragic death of 48-year-old Daniel Enriquez at the hands of a gunman.
Although subway crime rates experienced a temporary surge in early 2020 during the onset of the pandemic, they have since returned to normal levels in 2021. Despite this decline, passengers’ perceptions of the subway’s safety risks remain high.
Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat and former city police captain, has taken steps to alleviate commuters’ concerns by increasing the presence of police officers in subway stations.
