The earthquake, which registered a preliminary magnitude of 6.8, occurred in the southern reaches of the Sea of Okhotsk at 12:29 local time.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) swiftly responded to the tremor, assessing the situation and determining that despite the considerable magnitude, there was no imminent threat of a tsunami.
