19-6-2023 (WAHSINGTON) In a weekend marred by violence, at least six people, including a Pennsylvania state trooper, lost their lives, and dozens were left injured in a series of mass shootings across various cities in the United States. These incidents in suburban Chicago, Washington state, Pennsylvania, St. Louis, Southern California, and Baltimore are part of a concerning trend of increasing homicides and violence, which experts suggest has been exacerbated by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
According to Daniel Nagin, a professor of public policy and statistics at Carnegie Mellon University, there has undeniably been a surge in violence. He points out that some of these cases appear to be disputes, often involving adolescents, which are tragically resolved with firearms instead of peaceful resolution.
Researchers are divided on the root cause of this rise in violence. The prevalent theories include the role played by the widespread availability of guns in America, less aggressive police tactics, and a decline in prosecutions for misdemeanor weapon offenses, as explained by Nagin.
As of Sunday evening (Jun 18), none of the incidents over the weekend meet the criteria for a mass killing, as the death toll in each location was less than four. However, in most cases, the number of injured victims aligns with the widely accepted definition of mass shootings.
Let’s take a closer look at the shootings that occurred during this weekend:
WILLOWBROOK, ILLINOIS

In Willowbrook, a suburb of Chicago, one person was killed, and at least 22 others were wounded during a shooting early on Sunday at a party in a parking lot. The DuPage County sheriff’s office described the event as a “peaceful gathering” to celebrate Juneteenth. However, the atmosphere suddenly turned violent. The motive behind the attack remains unknown, and as of early afternoon, no arrests had been made. Markeshia Avery, a witness, stated that the celebration was meant to commemorate Juneteenth, a federal holiday observed on Monday, which marks the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Avery recounted how the shooting began and how they took cover until it stopped.
WASHINGTON STATE

At a Washington state campground where attendees were staying for a nearby music festival on Saturday night, a shooter opened fire “randomly” into a crowd, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to two others. Law enforcement officers confronted the suspect, leading to a confrontation during which the suspect was shot and subsequently taken into custody. The incident took place several hundred yards away from the Beyond Wonderland electronic dance music festival. A public alert was issued, advising people of an active shooter and providing instructions to “run, hide, or fight.” Despite the tragic events, the festival continued until early Sunday morning, after which organizers announced the cancellation of the concert scheduled for Sunday.
CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA

In central Pennsylvania on Saturday, a state trooper lost their life, and another was critically injured in two separate incidents that occurred within hours of each other. The first incident took place near the Lewistown barracks around 12:45 PM when a man engaged with troopers, shooting and seriously injuring one of them. The injured trooper was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment. The suspect managed to escape the scene but was found a couple of hours later, several miles away in Walker Township. A gunfight ensued, resulting in the death of the shooter and the mortal wounding of a second trooper. The identities of the troopers and the suspect have not been released at the time of reporting. Governor Josh Shapiro expressed his condolences in a social media post and provided an update on the injured trooper’s condition, stating that the officer was in critical but stable condition.
ST. LOUIS
Early on Sunday, a shooting in a downtown St. Louis office building claimed the life of a 17-year-old teenager and left nine other teenagers injured, according to Robert Tracy, the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Commissioner. The victim was identified as Makao Moore. A minor who possessed a handgun was taken into custody as a person of interest. The shooting occurred around 1 AM while teenagers were gathered for a party in an office space. The victims, aged between 15 and 19, sustained multiple gunshot wounds. One of the victims, a 17-year-old girl, suffered a serious spinal injury while attempting to flee the scene and was trampled. AR-style rifle casings and other firearm casings were found scattered on the ground.
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
A shooting at a pool party in Carson, California, resulted in eight people being wounded on Saturday. Authorities responded to the incident shortly after midnight. The victims, aged between 16 and 24, were transported to hospitals, with two of them listed in critical condition. Furthermore, when responding to a call regarding a vehicle that crashed into a nearby wall, authorities discovered another 16-year-old boy with a gunshot wound.
BALTIMORE
In Baltimore, a shooting on Friday night left six people injured, all of whom are expected to survive. Officers in the north of the city heard gunshots just before 9 PM and found three men with multiple gunshot wounds. Medical personnel transported them to nearby hospitals for treatment. Later, it was revealed that three additional victims had arrived at area hospitals with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. The age range of the wounded individuals was between 17 and 26, as confirmed by Lindsey Eldridge, a spokesperson for the Baltimore Police Department.
