5-9-2023 (CALIFORNIA) Steve Harwell, the charismatic frontman of the Grammy-nominated pop rock band Smash Mouth, known for their megahit “All Star,” has passed away at the age of 56. The sad news was confirmed by the band’s manager, Robert Hayes, who stated that Harwell peacefully and comfortably passed away on Monday morning (Sep 4) at his home in Boise, Idaho. The cause of his death was acute liver failure, according to Hayes.
Smash Mouth, recognized for their catchy tunes like “Walkin’ On The Sun” and “Then The Morning Comes,” achieved significant success under Harwell’s leadership. Reflecting on Harwell’s legacy, Hayes described him as a true American original, a larger-than-life character who soared into the sky like a Roman candle. He emphasized Harwell’s unwavering focus and passionate determination to achieve pop stardom, using his irrepressible charm, charisma, and fearlessly reckless ambition as his only tools. Hayes further noted that Harwell lived a life at full throttle, burning brightly across the universe before eventually burning out. He concluded by expressing the deep sense of loss felt by those who knew and loved Harwell.
