7-1-2024 (SINGAPORE) Stefanie Sun, the beloved Mandopop singer known as a national treasure in Singapore, has been faced with a surprising revelation as her younger sister, Ms Sng Ee Mei, announced on Weibo that she is cutting off ties with the local star. The announcement came in a heartfelt post on Friday (5 Jan), which coincided with Ms Sng’s 40th birthday.
While Ms Sng did not explicitly mention Stefanie’s name, her words strongly implied that she was referring to her famous sister. She expressed that she has been “living in the shadows for over 20 years” and yearned for “liberation.” Despite not being a celebrity, she lamented that she could not live a private life. Furthermore, Ms Sng revealed that her relationship with Stefanie had become very cold since 2019.

The lack of warmth between the sisters is evident from the fact that the last photo Stefanie shared on Instagram with her younger sister was on 2 March 2018. Ms Sng claimed that she had made various attempts to communicate with her older sister over the past three years but has now grown tired of doing so.
In her Weibo post, Ms Sng apologized if she fell short as a younger sister over the past 40 years and expressed her hope that those who had hurt her, whether intentionally or unintentionally, would learn from it and find their own peace.
This recent announcement follows previous signs of trouble within the family. In May 2023, Ms Sng posted on Weibo about her complicated relationship with their mother, citing her reluctance to become a doctor as a source of conflict. Netizens also noted exchanges where Ms Sng expressed discontent over perceived favoritism towards Stefanie by their parents.
In a 2022 post, Ms Sng expressed her unhappiness with strangers in Australia who she claimed had secretly recorded her while she was eating. She expressed her frustration at having to endure similar experiences even after moving to Australia to escape such incidents in Singapore.
Stefanie and Ee Mei have an older sister, Yee Kia, who works in the preschool sector. While it is not uncommon for family members to have disagreements, the decision to sever ties is undoubtedly saddening. It is hoped that the sisters will be able to reconcile their differences in the near future.
As of now, Stefanie has not responded to her sister’s post on any of her social media platforms.
