28-11-2023 (SINGAPORE) Chaos ensued at Tangs Market, located in the basement of Tang Plaza on Orchard Road, when a rat unexpectedly dropped from the ceiling onto a tray of food, startling diners and causing a commotion. The incident, captured on video, went viral on social media platforms, raising concerns about food safety and prompting an investigation by the Singapore Food Agency (SFA).
The video footage shows the rat landing on a tray containing a bowl of noodles and a fried meat cutlet. Initially motionless, the rodent suddenly twitches, sending nearby diners into a frenzy. Shouts and exclamations fill the air as the shocked onlookers react to the unexpected intruder. Some expressed their disbelief and called for immediate action, while others found amusement in the unusual situation, laughing amidst the chaos.
Although neighboring diners turned their heads to witness the unfolding scene, many remained unperturbed by the disturbance and continued with their meals as if the incident was a minor inconvenience. However, the presence of a live rat amidst the dining area undoubtedly raised concerns about hygiene and food safety.
According to reports from Stomp, the incident occurred on November 25, 2023, at the food court managed by the Fei Siong Group. Tangs Market is a popular dining spot frequented by locals and tourists alike, making the incident all the more disconcerting.
The video, initially shared on the Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu, quickly gained traction on various other social media platforms, drawing attention to the incident and prompting public outrage.
In response to the incident, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) announced on November 28 that they are launching an investigation. Emphasizing the importance of food safety, the agency stated that it is a shared responsibility between regulatory bodies like SFA and food operators. They urged food operators to adhere to stringent hygiene and preparation practices, warning that enforcement actions will be taken against any violations.
