1-11-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) A Sri Lankan factory worker lost his life on Thursday afternoon after attempting to evade immigration controls by jumping from a pedestrian bridge at Malaysia’s busiest border crossing with Singapore.
The incident occurred at approximately 4:48 PM at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex, when the man in his thirties leapt from the walkway connecting BSI to Johor Bahru Sentral, according to local police.
Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat, Johor Bahru South district police chief, reported that the victim landed on a passing vehicle beneath the bridge. Medical personnel from Hospital Sultanah Aminah pronounced him dead at the scene.
“Preliminary investigations indicate the deceased was attempting to circumvent immigration procedures at the checkpoint,” AC Raub stated. “We have classified this as a sudden death case, with no evidence of criminal involvement discovered thus far.”
The incident sparked significant social media attention, with images and footage of the scene circulating widely across various platforms. The victim’s remains have been transferred to Hospital Sultanah Aminah for post-mortem examination.
Police have established a hotline for witnesses to provide additional information about the incident, which can be reached at the Johor Bahru South police headquarters.
The BSI complex serves as a crucial link between Malaysia and Singapore, processing thousands of daily commuters and travellers crossing the causeway between the two nations.
