18-11-2023 (MANILA) In the aftermath of a magnitude 6.7 earthquake that struck off Mindanao island in the southern Philippines on November 17, the death toll has risen to six, with two individuals still missing, according to local disaster officials.
The offshore earthquake occurred in the afternoon at a depth of 60km, as reported by the German Research Center for Geosciences. Agripino Dacera, the disaster office chief of General Santos City in South Cotabato province, informed Reuters that three fatalities were reported in the city. A man and his wife lost their lives when a concrete wall collapsed on them, while another woman died in a shopping mall incident.
In Sarangani province, near the earthquake’s epicentre, at least two people perished, and rescuers are actively searching for two others who went missing due to a landslide, revealed a disaster response official in the coastal town of Glan.
In Davao Occidental province, a 78-year-old man was crushed by a rock, resulting in his death, as reported by Franz Irag, a civil defense officer in the Davao region, to DWPM radio.
While power supply has been restored, and most roads are now passable, disaster officials noted that the damage to homes and buildings is mostly minor. The Philippines is situated within the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a region known for frequent volcanic activity and earthquakes.
