13-12-2024 (SEOUL) In a significant development in the investigation of South Korea’s recent martial law crisis, police investigators have confiscated a highly secure mobile device belonging to former Defence Minister Kim Yong-hyun, who stands accused of orchestrating the controversial martial law declaration under President Yoon Suk Yeol’s administration.
The specialised communications device, dubbed the “secret phone” by South Korean media outlets, was recovered on 12 December during a coordinated raid at the Ministry of National Defence headquarters by a newly formed joint investigation team comprising police and Defence Ministry officials. The ministry complex, notably, shares its grounds with the presidential office.
Investigators believe the tamper-proof device, which is specifically designed to prevent wiretapping and call recording, could provide crucial evidence regarding communications between Kim and President Yoon during the implementation of martial law on 3 December.
According to Yonhap news agency, both Kim and President Yoon, who share an alumni connection from their school days, allegedly employed these secure devices to issue directives to military commanders during the six-hour period of martial law spanning 3-4 December.
The successful seizure comes after an earlier failed attempt to secure the device during a raid on Kim’s office and residence on 8 December. Kim, who was subsequently arrested on 10 December, faces serious charges including “engaging in critical duties during an insurrection” and “abuse of authority to obstruct the exercise of rights”.
In a dramatic turn of events, Kim attempted to take his own life whilst in detention following his public apology and admission of full responsibility for the martial law declaration. Prison authorities have confirmed he remains under close supervision in a secure facility and is currently in stable condition.
The political fallout continues to intensify as President Yoon faces a second impeachment vote scheduled for 14 December. The initial attempt at impeachment was thwarted when the majority of his People Power Party members abstained from voting, though some party members have now indicated their intention to support the motion.
Meanwhile, public demonstrations demanding President Yoon’s resignation have erupted across the nation, with significant protests taking place in Seoul and extending as far as Jeju Island.
