8-1-2025 (SEOUL) South Korean authorities have renewed their arrest warrant for impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol, marking a dramatic escalation in the ongoing corruption investigation that has gripped the nation.
The Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission announced the decision on Tuesday, following a series of unsuccessful attempts to apprehend the embattled former leader. The renewed warrant comes after investigators faced unprecedented resistance at Yoon’s residence last week, where they were confronted by an imposing barrier of presidential security personnel and military guards who formed a human shield to prevent access.
The chief investigator, speaking to journalists in Seoul, emphasised their unwavering commitment to bringing the former president into custody, despite the initial setback. “Our mandate to investigate these serious allegations remains unchanged, and we shall pursue all legal avenues available to execute this warrant,” the official stated.
In a last-ditch effort to evade arrest, Yoon’s legal team had sought judicial intervention by filing an emergency injunction to invalidate the arrest warrant. However, their attempts were thwarted when a Seoul district court dismissed the appeal on Sunday, effectively reinforcing the legitimacy of the investigation team’s authority to proceed with the arrest.
