25-1-2025 (MANILA) The Philippines has waded into new diplomatic waters with China following the release of an educational comic book aimed at teaching Filipino children about the contentious South China Sea territorial dispute.
The 40-page illustrated publication, “Teacher Jun’s Story”, has drawn sharp criticism from Beijing after its launch as part of Manila’s broader public awareness campaign about maritime sovereignty issues.
The educational comic follows the adventures of its titular character, Teacher Jun, and his pupils as they explore complex topics including maritime boundaries, international legal frameworks, and the vital importance of protecting the Philippines’ marine resources.
At the heart of the controversy is a chapter dedicated to the landmark 2016 ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration, which effectively nullified China’s sweeping claims to much of the South China Sea—a ruling that Beijing continues to reject.

National Security Advisor Eduardo Año defended the publication, characterising it as a crucial educational tool designed to counter what he described as Chinese misinformation. “We face ongoing challenges from Chinese officials and state-backed media who persistently spread distorted narratives to undermine our position and legitimise their unilateral claims,” Año told reporters.
The Philippine Coast Guard has thrown its weight behind the initiative, with Captain Jay Tarriela expressing hope that the comic would inspire a new generation of Filipinos to become guardians of their maritime heritage. “This publication serves to instil in our youth the importance of protecting what is rightfully ours,” he remarked.
However, the Chinese Embassy in Manila swiftly condemned the educational material, dismissing it as “political manipulation” and the latest in what it views as provocative actions by the Philippine government.
