28-9-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR)M. Suria, the 25-year-old son of G. Vijayalakshmi, returned to Malaysia to perform the final rites for his mother who tragically vanished into a sinkhole on Jalan Masjid India one month ago. The solemn ceremony, marking the end of the traditional 30-day mourning period in Hindu custom, took place at the very site where his mother was last seen.
A TikTok video posted by user @sarvaessrashbinrajappa on 23rd September captured the poignant moment. The footage shows Suria standing at the edge of the eight-metre-deep sinkhole, gently tossing flowers into the void while murmuring prayers. The caption, “Ammavukku iruthi mariyatai sekirar” (final respects for the mother), underscored the emotional weight of the occasion.
The tragic incident occurred on 23rd August when 48-year-old Vijayalakshmi, originally from Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh, India, fell into the sudden sinkhole that opened up on the busy Kuala Lumpur street. Despite an intensive nine-day search and rescue (SAR) operation, authorities were unable to locate her body, leading to the heart-breaking decision to terminate the search due to safety concerns and recurring sinkhole incidents in the area.
The video of Suria’s return has resonated deeply with netizens across Malaysia, prompting an outpouring of sympathy and condolences on social media platforms. Many expressed their admiration for Suria’s strength in the face of such an incomprehensible loss, with comments reflecting the universal pain of losing a parent.
One user wrote, “Rest in peace. This is how painful it is to lose a mother.” Another empathised, “Who wouldn’t be heartbroken when the body of their deceased mum is not found? We can only be strong. Be patient, pray for your mum.”
