2-7-2023 (PHNOM PENH) Tragedy struck in the Cambodian capital as a fire engulfed an under-repair nightclub, resulting in the deaths of six individuals, according to a spokesperson for the Phnom Penh Municipal Police.
The incident occurred at around 5 p.m. local time on Saturday at a nightclub located in the Tuol Kork district of Phnom Penh. San Sok Seiha, the Phnom Penh Municipal Police spokesperson, confirmed that four men and two women lost their lives in the blaze. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
In 2022, Cambodia witnessed a total of 454 fire accidents throughout the country, leading to the deaths of 42 people and injuring 55 others, as reported by the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM).
Notably, on December 28 of the previous year, a major fire broke out at the Grand Diamond City hotel and casino in Poipet, a town situated along the border with Thailand. The incident claimed the lives of 26 individuals, as stated by the NCDM.
