14-9-2023 (MANILA) An intriguing video featuring British actor Sir Michael Caine recounting an amusing anecdote about his time in the Philippines, where he was mistaken for a drug dealer, has resurfaced and gone viral on the internet.
The video clip is from an episode of “The Graham Norton Show,” specifically the 21st season premiere, which originally aired in April 2017. Sir Michael Caine appeared as a guest alongside fellow celebrities Morgan Freeman, Jack Whitehall, Gemma Whelan, and the members of Take That.
During the episode, Caine presented Norton with a birthday card that contained a modulator sampling Caine’s iconic cockney accent, creating a unique greeting. Norton playfully pointed out that when Caine says “Michael Caine” in a cockney accent, it sounds remarkably similar to “my cocaine.” This led Caine to share a humorous and memorable story from his past.
Caine recalled, “I was making a picture in the Philippines, I’m in Manila, and we were invited to this very posh, expensive house for a party.” He noted that at the time, he observed the party hostess giving him a rather unpleasant look from a distance. When Caine had a moment free from conversation, the hostess approached him and inquired if he was a drug dealer, to which Caine promptly denied any involvement in such activities.
Amused by the misunderstanding, Caine inquired, “Why do you ask?” The hostess responded, “Why is everybody calling you ‘may cocaine’?” Caine couldn’t help but chuckle as he concluded, “You know that story’s true because you couldn’t make it up!”
The movie that likely brought Caine to the Philippines was the 1970 World War II film “Too Late the Hero,” in which he starred alongside actors such as Cliff Robertson, Ian Bannen, and Henry Fonda. This war film, which primarily focused on the Pacific theater, was predominantly shot in locations like Boracay and Subic in 1969.
Sir Michael Caine is widely recognized for his collaborations with director Christopher Nolan, particularly in “The Dark Knight” trilogy, where he portrayed Bruce Wayne’s trusted butler, Alfred Pennyworth.
