25-9-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) A substantial sinkhole has materialised near the entrance of Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s (KLIA) prestigious Bunga Raya Complex, prompting immediate action from airport authorities and the Works Ministry. The cavity, estimated to measure 5 metres in width and 1 metre in depth, has appeared in a critical area between the complex’s entrance and exit, potentially affecting the smooth passage of VIP guests and dignitaries.
The Works Ministry, in an official statement released on Wednesday, assured the public that despite the unexpected geological event, the road remains open to all vehicles. However, a comprehensive traffic management plan has been swiftly implemented to ensure the safety of all road users navigating the affected area.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), the entity responsible for managing the country’s airports, has launched a thorough investigation into the incident. Initial suspicions point towards a possible leaking sewage pipe as the culprit behind the sudden ground collapse. MAHB’s team of experts is working diligently to ascertain whether this suspected leak is indeed the root cause of the sinkhole’s formation.
The Works Ministry emphasized that additional measures have been put in place, including continuous site monitoring and inspections by relevant authorities. These precautionary steps aim to prevent any further deterioration of the affected area and ensure the safety of all airport users.
It is worth noting that the road in question, classified as a “protocol road” due to its significance in transporting high-profile individuals, does not fall under the jurisdiction of the Public Works Department or Roadcare, the usual road maintenance contractor. This unique status may present additional challenges in addressing the issue promptly.
