22-5-2023 (Singapore) Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has tested positive for COVID-19 after his recent official visits to South Africa and Kenya, according to a statement he shared on his Facebook page on Monday (May 22).
The 71-year-old Prime Minister revealed that he received the positive test result that morning, following his return from the work trips. While he mentioned feeling generally okay, his doctors have advised him to self-isolate until he becomes asymptomatic.

In light of his age, Mr Lee disclosed that he has been prescribed the antiviral medication Paxlovid. He also mentioned that his most recent COVID-19 vaccine booster was administered in November. Urging the public to stay vigilant, he emphasized the importance of keeping vaccinations up-to-date, as they significantly reduce the risk of severe illness.
The Prime Minister’s official visits took him to Cape Town, South Africa, from May 14 to 16, and Nairobi, Kenya, from May 17 to 19. These trips were part of his diplomatic engagements aimed at fostering relations with these countries.
As COVID-19 continues to be endemic in Singapore, Mr Lee stressed the need for everyone to prioritize their safety and well-being. The country remains committed to managing the ongoing challenges posed by the virus while promoting public health measures.
