15-10-2023 (SINGAPORE) Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong extended his warm congratulations to New Zealand’s Prime Minister-elect, Christopher Luxon, following his election victory in Saturday’s general election. Luxon’s National Party secured enough seats to form a coalition government with the ACT party.
In a letter addressed to Luxon, Prime Minister Lee conveyed his congratulations on behalf of the Singaporean government. He expressed confidence in New Zealand’s prosperity under Luxon’s leadership, particularly in the face of uncertain times ahead.
The message also highlighted the enduring and close relationship between the two nations, reinforced by the Singapore-New Zealand Enhanced Partnership. Both countries have collaborated on various pioneering initiatives, such as the Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership (P4) and the Digital Economy Partnership Agreement (DEPA).
Prime Minister Lee noted that the increasing cooperation in enhancing supply chain resilience would bring mutual benefits in an ever more challenging and complex global environment.
Furthermore, he expressed his anticipation of working closely with Luxon to bolster bilateral ties and to engage in regional and international cooperation. The letter reminisced about their meeting in June 2022 during Luxon’s visit to Singapore and expressed a desire for another meeting in the near future.
Prime Minister Lee conveyed his best wishes for the success of Luxon’s government. The election marked the end of a six-year rule by the centre-left Labour Party, led by outgoing Prime Minister Chris Hipkins, who had assumed leadership from Jacinda Ardern in January.
