21-10-2023 (SINGAPORE) Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong emphasized the importance of maintaining relations with both Israelis and Palestinians while providing humanitarian aid for civilians affected by the Israel-Hamas conflict. Speaking during his visit to Saudi Arabia for the ASEAN-GCC summit, Mr. Lee acknowledged the concerns of the Muslim population in Singapore, who feel empathy and compassion for the Palestinian cause. However, he stressed the need for Singapore to act sensibly by engaging with both sides and offering support to civilian victims in Gaza and Israel.
Looking towards a long-term solution, Prime Minister Lee expressed Singapore’s belief in a two-state resolution where Israelis and Palestinians coexist peacefully. He emphasized that progress towards this goal is crucial to avoid generations of bloodshed and tragedy. Despite the challenges, he urged not to give up on this aspiration, emphasizing the importance of both sides recognizing each other’s right to exist and have their own nations.
Mr. Lee mentioned that members of Parliament have filed questions regarding the conflict, and a full discussion will take place when parliament convenes in November. He condemned the attack by Hamas on Israeli civilians, describing it as horrendous and unjustifiable. At the same time, he emphasized that Israel, while exercising its right to self-defense, must comply with international law and take measures to minimize civilian casualties and address humanitarian concerns.
During the ASEAN-GCC summit, Prime Minister Lee also discussed potential economic cooperation between the two regions. He highlighted the benefits of collaboration between like-minded countries, especially in times of tension. Singapore already has a free trade agreement with the GCC and significant trade ties. The formal dialogue between ASEAN and GCC aims to facilitate more institutionalized collaboration, particularly in economic areas such as logistics, energy, and digitalization. Mr. Lee expressed hope for increased trade volume and investments, particularly with Saudi Arabia.
Additionally, Prime Minister Lee sought flexibility from Saudi Arabia regarding the Haj quota for Singaporean Muslims. He requested an increase in the quota to address the long waiting list for the pilgrimage. He expressed optimism that Saudi Arabia would consider this request and find a solution to accommodate more Singaporean Muslims in the coming years.
