27-8-2024 (SINGAPORE) Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has emphasised the critical role of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) as the nation’s most important insurance policy in an increasingly volatile global landscape. During his inaugural visit to the Basic Military Training Centre (BMTC) on Pulau Tekong, PM Wong underscored the significance of national service as the backbone of Singapore’s defence capabilities.
Addressing a gathering of approximately 420 recruits, trainers, and staff, PM Wong expressed gratitude to those serving their country, stating, “Every generation of Singaporeans has served national service, and now it’s your turn.” He acknowledged the sacrifice and contribution made by both regular personnel and national servicemen in safeguarding the nation’s security.
The Prime Minister’s visit, his first to BMTC since taking office in May, included participation in various training activities. He joined recruits for a 1.8km run and engaged in strength conditioning exercises and SAR 21 rifle technical handling training. These activities provided PM Wong with firsthand experience of the current training regimen and allowed him to reflect on his own national service journey, which began more than three decades ago.

Highlighting the evolution of military training, PM Wong noted the significant changes that have occurred since his enlistment in 1991. He praised the SAF’s ability to adapt and improve, stating, “The resets and the upgrades and the transformations, in fact, are continually taking place.” The Prime Minister emphasised that while training methods have become more science-based and technologically advanced, the core standards of producing fighting-fit soldiers remain unchanged.
In light of the global security landscape, PM Wong stressed the importance of mental preparedness for any eventuality. He remarked, “We’re not at conflict in this part of the world, but we have to be mentally prepared for any eventuality.” This sentiment underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining a robust defence force capable of responding to potential threats.
The Prime Minister also touched upon the personal growth aspects of military training, encouraging recruits to embrace the discipline, grit, and resilience fostered during their service. Sharing his own experience of physical improvement through military training, PM Wong illustrated how the SAF can push individuals beyond their perceived limits.
Looking ahead, PM Wong reaffirmed the government’s commitment to continued investment in both the SAF and the Home Team. He emphasised the critical nature of these institutions in ensuring Singapore’s security and stability. The Prime Minister called for ongoing public support for national service and recognition of the sacrifices made by servicemen and their families.
