21-6-2024 (SINGAPORE) A 27-year-old Singaporean man, Ng Jing Kai, has been charged with murder in Perth, Australia, after allegedly hitting a cyclist with his car intentionally over a suspected property dispute.
According to the Western Australia Police Force (WAPF), Ng approached the 48-year-old cyclist around 1.45 pm on May 24 while driving a grey Kia Carnival car in Carlisle, a suburb of Perth. In what appears to be an act of vigilantism, Ng then struck the cyclist with his vehicle, causing the victim to be dragged under the car for over 30 meters, sustaining critical injuries.
The cyclist was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries. Ng was subsequently questioned by the police and charged with one count of murder on the same day.
During a press conference the following day, Detective Inspector David Gorton from the WAPF’s major crime division revealed that the police are investigating a possible property dispute between the parties that may have led to the incident.
“We are looking into what we believe was an incident the previous day. We believe that might have involved a personal property item,” Gorton stated.
According to the detective inspector, the victim suffered critical injuries after being dragged by the car for more than 30 meters. Several other individuals, believed to be Ng’s family and friends, were also present in the vehicle at the time of the incident and have been interviewed by the police.
Gorton urged members of the public to contact the WAPF if they feel they need assistance, regardless of the severity of the crime. “We just want to reiterate to members of the public that if you are a victim of crime, no matter how serious the incident is, we urge you to contact the WAPF if you feel you need assistance,” he said.
Australian media reports indicate that detectives and forensic investigators thoroughly examined the scene on May 24, cordoning off the adjacent streets and redirecting motorists and pedestrians away from the area.
Ng, who is currently in custody, is scheduled to appear in the Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court on June 26.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Ng has been employed as a mathematics tutor with Indigo Education Group since October 2022. He holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Nanyang Technological University and graduated from Dunman High School in 2015.
