25-2-2025 (SYDNEY) A 55-year-old Singaporean national finds himself at the centre of a major drug trafficking investigation that could see him behind bars for life. Shanmugam Sundar Darmaraju stands accused of orchestrating an audacious attempt to import substantial quantities of illegal substances into Australia.
The sophisticated smuggling operation came to light when Australian Border Force (ABF) officers discovered two abandoned suitcases on a luggage carousel, bearing identification tags with Darmaraju’s details. Upon inspection, authorities uncovered a staggering haul of 32kg of methamphetamine and 8kg of cocaine, with the former valued at $18.8 million and the latter at approximately $2.6 million in street value.
Despite initially clearing immigration checks by claiming he had no checked baggage, Darmaraju’s alleged plan began to unravel rapidly. Following the discovery, the suspect managed to board a domestic flight to Adelaide, presumably in an attempt to evade detection. However, his freedom was short-lived, as authorities apprehended him at Adelaide Airport whilst attempting to flee to Malaysia.
The suspect’s legal journey began in Adelaide Magistrates Court, followed by his extradition to New South Wales. During his appearance at the Downing Centre Local Court, Darmaraju faced two counts of importing a commercial quantity of border-controlled substances, with bail being denied.
Singapore’s Central Narcotics Bureau has acknowledged the case, confirming their awareness of the situation involving their citizen. A spokesperson indicated their willingness to cooperate with Australian authorities, though declined to provide further commentary due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.
The case, which began when Darmaraju arrived on a flight from Malaysia on 20th February, represents one of the more significant drug interceptions in recent Australian border control operations. If convicted, the accused faces the possibility of life imprisonment under Australian law.
