8-9-2023 (SINGAPORE) Responding to a request from Ukraine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) announced on Tuesday (Sep 7) that Singapore will be dispatching a humanitarian assistance package consisting of 22 ambulances to the country.
The package has been assembled to provide support to international efforts aimed at addressing the “humanitarian crisis and needs” currently faced by Ukraine, stated the ministry.
Ukraine finds itself embroiled in a counteroffensive against a Russian invasion, which has resulted in the destruction of cities and the loss of thousands of lives since its commencement in February 2022. The Kremlin insists that this is a “special military operation.”
This latest assistance from Singapore follows a previous aid delivery to Ukraine in June 2022. The previous package included nine ambulances, two fire engines, as well as an assortment of firefighting protective gear, rescue equipment, mine detectors, and medical supplies.
Furthermore, in April of the previous year, the Singapore Red Cross pledged its third installment of aid to support Ukrainian refugees, bringing the total amount disbursed to S$3.66 million.
Within that installment were provisions of medical and first aid supplies, medical equipment, medicines for rare diseases, and hygiene products. Additionally, in December 2022, the Singapore Red Cross extended its support by facilitating the construction of ten locally-designed modular houses to assist communities enduring harsh winter conditions in Ukraine.
These houses have been specifically engineered to withstand freezing temperatures and other adversities. The Red Cross also supplied generators, medical equipment, as well as water and sanitation systems.
In addition, a mobile medical clinic was procured by the Singapore Red Cross for a regional division of the Ukrainian Red Cross Society.
