26-7-2023 (SINGAPORE) Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan announced a significant step in bilateral relations on Monday as Singapore revealed its plans to set up an embassy in Timor-Leste’s capital, Dili. This move is considered a milestone in the friendship between the two nations and aims to enhance access and cooperation opportunities between Timor-Leste, with a population of over 1.3 million, and Singapore.
Describing Timor-Leste as an old friend, Dr. Balakrishnan expressed admiration and respect for the nation’s journey since its inception. As Timor-Leste joins the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Singapore sees the establishment of a resident embassy as an opportune time to strengthen cooperation, provide support, and explore mutual opportunities in the future.
Singapore will be the sixth ASEAN country to open an embassy in Timor-Leste, an emerging tourist destination renowned for its picturesque beaches, turquoise waters, and rugged mountains. While the embassy setup process might take several years, it involves carefully selecting a suitable location, appointing a resident ambassador in due course, and establishing delegates on the ground.
The ties between Singapore and Timor-Leste date back to 1999 when Singapore actively participated in peacekeeping operations before Timor-Leste gained independence. Singapore’s contributions included more than 1,000 personnel from the Singapore Armed Forces, medical teams, combat peacekeepers, and equipment like landing ship tanks and helicopters. Additionally, the Singapore Police Force supported the establishment of the East Timor Police Service by sending police officers to Timor-Leste.
Currently, both countries are focused on the economic aspect of their relationship. Singapore was Timor-Leste’s second-largest trading partner and export destination in 2021, and Singapore remains a significant foreign investor in Timor-Leste. Singaporean firms have shown confidence in the country’s economic potential, particularly due to its young, dynamic, and energetic population.
During his visit, Dr. Balakrishnan held meetings with Timor-Leste President Jose Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao, reaffirming the warm and longstanding relations between the two nations. He expressed optimism about the future, highlighting the ambitious plans of the Timorese leadership. Throughout his four-day trip, Dr. Balakrishnan will also engage with Singaporeans who have established business and people-to-people connections in Timor-Leste.
