7-9-2024 (SINGAPORE) In a bold move to cement its position as a leading global aviation hub, Singapore is set to commence construction on a new mega terminal at its world-renowned Changi Airport. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced that work on the ambitious Terminal 5 project will begin in the first half of next year, as reported by the Straits Times.
This monumental expansion is designed to significantly boost Changi’s passenger handling capacity, adding an impressive 50 million to its annual throughput. Currently, the airport boasts a capacity of 90 million passengers per year, a figure that has positioned it as one of the busiest and most efficient airports in the world.
The new Terminal 5, slated for completion in the mid-2030s, is not just about increasing passenger numbers. It also aims to enhance Singapore’s global connectivity, with plans to expand its network to over 200 cities, up from the current 150. This strategic move is expected to reinforce Singapore’s status as a key transit hub and destination in the Asia-Pacific region.
Speaking at an industry dinner on Friday, Prime Minister Wong highlighted the competitive landscape driving this expansion. “Some have announced plans for mega airports that can handle more than 100 million passengers a year. So, they are narrowing the gap with Singapore,” he stated, underscoring the need for Singapore to stay ahead in the increasingly competitive aviation sector.
