2-12-2023 (SINGAPORE) Singapore has received a cordial invitation from Brazil to participate in the G20 Summit and associated meetings scheduled for 2024. The announcement comes as Brazil assumes the G20 presidency from India, officially commencing its term on December 1. The summit is set to take place in Rio de Janeiro from November 18 to 19 next year.
Expressing appreciation for the invitation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and the Ministry of Finance (MOF) issued a joint press statement on Saturday, highlighting the excellent relations and close cooperation between the two countries in various multilateral forums.
The statement emphasized Singapore’s commitment to actively contribute to the G20 process, leveraging its position as the Convenor of the Global Governance Group (3G). The Global Governance Group is an informal coalition of 30 smaller and medium-sized members of the United Nations, fostering stronger linkages between the G20 and UN member nations.
Despite not being a formal G20 member, Singapore has been invited to participate in the summit and its related meetings for over a decade. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong represented Singapore at the G20 Summit hosted by India in September 2023 and in Bali in 2022.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil outlined the country’s priorities for its G20 presidency, focusing on key issues such as reducing hunger and poverty, addressing climate change, and advocating for global governance reform. President Lula expressed his hope to confront and resolve critical global challenges during his term.
In response, the Singaporean statement conveyed anticipation to collaborate constructively with the Brazilian presidency and other G20 members and guests. The shared objectives include realising Brazil’s priorities of building a just world and a sustainable planet. This involves addressing critical issues such as promoting social inclusion, combating hunger, managing energy transition, sustainable development, and reforming global governance. Singapore remains committed to contributing actively to these important global discussions.
