3-4-2024 (SINGAPORE) Singapore has announced its decision not to bid for the opportunity to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games. In a joint statement issued on April 3 by Commonwealth Games Singapore (CGS) and Sport Singapore (SportSG), it was revealed that the feasibility of hosting the prestigious multi-sport event was thoroughly examined, leading to the conclusion not to pursue a bid.
This decision leaves the 2026 Commonwealth Games without a designated host, prompting continued efforts to seek an organizer for the event.
Prior to Singapore’s decision, Malaysia had also opted out of hosting the Games, citing concerns over time constraints, financial implications, and insufficient funding offers.
Background information reveals that Victoria state in Australia was initially slated to host the event. However, escalating costs led to Victoria withdrawing its bid. The budget for the Games had surged from the original estimate of A$2.6 billion (S$2.29 billion) to a staggering A$7 billion (S$6.15 billion). Subsequently, Australian cities Gold Coast and Perth, which had jointly bid for the 2026 Games, withdrew their bid due to a lack of support from state or federal governments. Gold Coast had previously hosted the 2018 Games.
During the Commonwealth Games Federation’s (CGF) general assembly in November 2023, all member associations were encouraged to consider hosting the event, with a promise of £100 million (S$170 million) in financial and strategic support. Singapore was among the invited nations to submit a bid.
Singapore’s previous participation in the Commonwealth Games underscores its significance. In the 2022 Birmingham Games, Singaporean athletes secured four gold, four silver, and four bronze medals across 280 events spanning 20 sports. The Games attracted over 5,000 athletes from 72 nations and territories, highlighting its broad scope and global participation.
