3-12-2024 (SINGAPORE) South Africa has formally invited Singapore to participate as a guest nation in the G20 meetings during its upcoming presidency of the prestigious economic forum in 2025, marking another milestone in the city-state’s engagement with the global economic body.
The Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the invitation on Tuesday, highlighting the robust bilateral relationship between the two nations. The partnership, which spans multiple sectors including commerce, aviation, digital technology, and workforce development, reflects decades of successful cooperation between Singapore and South Africa.
While Singapore is not among the permanent members of the G20—which consists of 19 nation-states plus the European Union and African Union—it has maintained a consistent presence at the forum’s gatherings through regular invitations. Most recently, Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong attended the 2023 G20 Summit in Brazil at the behest of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
In its dual capacity as both an independent nation and the Convenor of the Global Governance Group, Singapore has pledged to maintain its active involvement in G20 proceedings. The Ministry expressed particular interest in supporting South Africa’s chosen theme of “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability” for its 2025 presidency.
