21-12-2023 (SINGAPORE) The Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Grand Prix 2023 has garnered widespread acclaim within the international motorsports community, earning the prestigious title of the “Best Race” of the season.
However, it’s not just because Red Bull failed to emerge victorious.
Renowned sports outlets including Sky Sports, ESPN, Metro, and online racing news site WTF1 have all unanimously declared Singapore as the standout event of the year.
“We are not saying this just because Red Bull didn’t win; it was genuinely a thrilling race until the very end. Carlos Sainz, Lando Norris, George Russell, and Lewis Hamilton engaged in a fierce four-way battle for the lead in the closing stages,” reported Sky Sports.
Motorsport Magazine has also recognized the F1 night race, nominating it for its own prestigious accolade.
“The only race that Red Bull didn’t win concluded with an exhilarating finish as race leader Carlos Sainz strategically slowed down, providing second-placed Lando Norris with DRS assistance to defend his position,” wrote the magazine.
In addition to the race itself, the Singapore team of recovery marshals has received commendation from the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) as the “Best Team of Officials.”
This esteemed recognition is awarded annually as one of the categories under the FIA Volunteers and Officials Awards, which aim to celebrate the dedication and efforts of volunteer race officials across motorsports events worldwide.
The recovery marshals at this year’s Singapore Grand Prix were lauded for their exceptional teamwork and efficiency in executing 17 recoveries throughout the event. Notable incidents they handled included Lance Stroll’s crash during qualifying, Esteban Ocon’s retirement due to a gearbox failure, and George Russell’s final lap collision.
Janette Tan, the race operations director of Singapore GP, revealed that the recovery team consisted of 50 dedicated volunteers. These individuals are part of a larger team of 900 volunteer marshals who hail from various backgrounds. Impressively, 90 percent of them return for every edition of the race, showcasing their unwavering commitment and passion for the event.
