17-11-2023 (SINGAPORE) Singapore has urged for the “immediate, safe, and unhindered” provision of aid to civilians in Gaza, expressing deep concern over the worsening humanitarian situation in the region. The country welcomed the United Nations’ (UN) Security Council resolution 2712, which called for urgent and extended humanitarian pauses and corridors in Gaza.
The resolution, adopted on Wednesday, garnered support from 12 out of the 15 council members, emphasizing the need for humanitarian pauses and corridors throughout the Gaza Strip. The objective is to facilitate aid delivery to civilians in the besieged territory and ensure compliance with international humanitarian obligations, especially concerning the protection of civilians, particularly children.
In a press statement on Friday, Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) reiterated its commitment to addressing the deteriorating situation in Gaza. The statement emphasized the importance of making every effort for the immediate, safe, and unhindered provision of humanitarian aid to affected civilians in Gaza.
Singapore also called for the swift and secure release of civilian hostages in Gaza, expressing deep regret over the impact of Israel’s military operations at the Al Shifa hospital. The MFA urged Israel to prioritize the protection of civilians and medical facilities, emphasizing compliance with international humanitarian law.
Highlighting the need to safeguard civilian infrastructure, including hospitals and schools, Singapore called on all parties to refrain from using such premises for military purposes or using civilians as human shields. The country pledged to work closely with humanitarian partners to provide additional assistance and support to the Palestinian people.
