The announcement came after a bilateral meeting hosted by US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken.
Dr. Balakrishnan highlighted the US-Singapore Climate Partnership, signed in 2021, which will focus on regional energy transitions, low- and zero-emission technologies, nature-based solutions, carbon markets, urban decarbonization, and resilience.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Dr. Balakrishnan, Secretary Blinken emphasized the strong bilateral relationship between the two countries in the Indo-Pacific region. He acknowledged Singapore as a critical security partner, mentioning the hosting of American ships and aircraft as well as pilot training.
Secretary Blinken said, “For six decades now, the strategic partnership between the United States and Singapore, rooted in respect for the rules-based international order, has helped strengthen peace and stability in the region and around the world.”
Dr. Balakrishnan highlighted the deep economic ties between Singapore and the US, which go beyond trade. He mentioned that Singapore’s investments in the US and US exports to Singapore support over 250,000 jobs in America, emphasizing the importance of the relationship for job creation and opportunities.
Both leaders acknowledged the expansion of their cooperation into new frontiers beyond the robust economic relationship. They emphasized the United States’ strategic presence and contribution to stability and opportunity in the region.
Dr. Balakrishnan also highlighted the significance of Secretary Blinken’s upcoming trip to Beijing, where he will meet with Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang and other officials. He stressed the importance of the US and China working together on global issues such as climate change, pandemics, and cybersecurity.
The minister expressed hope that the US and China can manage their differences and establish open channels of communication, building mutual trust and understanding. He emphasized the need for a rules-based multilateral system, particularly as the world transitions into a multipolar world.
Dr. Balakrishnan’s visit to the US includes meetings with senior climate officials in the Biden administration, discussions with lawmakers focusing on Asia and China legislation, and engagements with think tanks such as the Council on Foreign Relations.
