8-9-2023 (SINGAPORE) Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau concluded his two-day working visit to Singapore on Friday, during which both countries unveiled plans for a “youth mobility agreement.” This agreement aims to strengthen people-to-people connections and facilitate cross-cultural exchanges by simplifying the process for young individuals from both nations to work and travel in each other’s countries.
The announcement was made in a joint statement by the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) following Mr. Trudeau’s meeting with Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. The leaders reaffirmed the strong and warm friendship between Singapore and Canada during their discussions.
Singapore and Canada share a common perspective on key global issues, including a commitment to multilateralism, the rule of law, and the significance of free trade. These shared values underpin the robust ties between the two nations.
In their meeting at the Istana, the Prime Ministers addressed international developments and explored opportunities for Singapore and Canada to collaborate in upholding the rules-based multilateral order while driving economic growth for the benefit of their citizens.
Prime Minister Lee welcomed Canada’s increasing engagement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and commended the recent elevation of ASEAN-Canada relations to a strategic partnership.
During his visit, Mr. Trudeau expressed Canada’s expectation of finalizing a free trade agreement with ASEAN, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to deeper economic ties with the region.
Singapore’s relationship with Canada is marked by a long history of cooperation and continued growth in various fields. Notably, the two countries have a Canada-Singapore Cybersecurity Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which encompasses information exchange and skills development, among other aspects. Additionally, negotiations have commenced for a general security agreement aimed at facilitating closer defense exchanges and collaboration.
Both nations are actively exploring opportunities for cooperation in the realms of science, technology, and innovation.
Mr. Trudeau’s visit to Singapore is a testament to the enduring ties between the two countries. His previous trip to Singapore in 2018 included a poignant visit to pay respects to his great-great-great-great-grandmother, Esther Bernard, whose commemorative plaque is located at Fort Canning.
