17-4-2024 (BANGKOK) A sightseeing excursion along the historic waterways of Ayutthaya took an unexpected turn on Tuesday when a fire erupted aboard a tourist vessel, sending plumes of smoke billowing across the Chao Phraya River. Fortunately, swift action by nearby boats and rescue crews ensured the safe evacuation of all passengers and crew members.
The incident unfolded at approximately 2:30 pm, as the Kalae, a sightseeing boat carrying 24 tourists, including five children, and two crew members, navigated the waters of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya district. While lunch was being served on board, an alarming blaze broke out, prompting an immediate response from nearby vessels and authorities.
In a testament to the preparedness and coordination of the local maritime community, crews from another tourist boat and a ship operated by the Marine Office in Ayutthaya swiftly sprang into action. Witnessing the unfolding crisis, they mobilized to evacuate all passengers and crew members onto their vessels, ensuring their safe transport to shore.
The wind, seemingly lending a hand in the rescue efforts, fortuitously pushed the stricken Kalae towards the river bank, facilitating easier access for firefighting operations.
Natnicha Sorndee, the owner of the affected boat, sought to reassure the public by emphasizing the vessel’s adherence to stringent safety protocols. In a statement to Channel 3, she affirmed that the Kalae was equipped with all requisite safety gear, including lifejackets, and that the engine underwent regular inspections in accordance with the Marine Department’s rigorous standards.
While the cause of the blaze remains under investigation, authorities are working diligently to uncover the circumstances that led to the incident. The extent of the damage sustained by the Kalae has yet to be fully assessed.
