19-12-2024 (JAKARTA) A shocking assault case at a Jakarta bakery has sparked widespread outrage across Indonesia, laying bare deep-seated social tensions and class divisions in the nation’s capital.
George Sugama Halim, 35, the son of a prominent bakery chain’s owners, was arrested Monday following the emergence of a viral video showing him violently attacking a teenage employee. The incident has thrust issues of wealth inequality and ethnic relations into the national spotlight.
The victim, identified as Dwi Ayu, 19, delivered compelling testimony before Parliament on Tuesday, describing a harrowing ordeal that unfolded on 17 October at the establishment in Cakung. According to her account, the confrontation began when she declined to deliver Halim’s online food order to his private quarters, considering it beyond her professional duties.
In her testimony, Ayu recounted a chilling exchange that highlighted the power dynamics at play. “When I warned him about reporting to authorities, he mockingly declared his immunity due to wealth, sneering that I was ‘a poor nobody’ whilst he was ‘rich and above the law’,” she told MPs.
Disturbing footage captured by another employee shows Halim launching a violent tirade, hurling multiple objects at the young worker, including a decorative figurine and card payment terminal. The situation escalated when he allegedly threw a metal baking tray, striking Ayu’s head and causing injury that forced her to seek refuge near the bakery’s ovens.
The case has drawn significant public attention, with Ayu’s legal representatives criticising what they perceived as a delayed police response. Law enforcement officials have firmly rejected these allegations, asserting their commitment to thoroughly investigating the incident.
