21-5-2023 (Taipei) Chaos erupted at a 7-11 store on Changsha Road in Zhongli, Taiwan, on Saturday morning (May 20th) when a shirtless man went on a rampage, causing shelves to topple and creating a disturbance. According to a report by UDN, the man became furious upon discovering that the store had run out of ready-to-eat Italian-flavored chicken breast, despite other flavors being available. The incident quickly went viral on social media, with netizens dubbing the man the “Taiwan Hulk.”
The situation took a violent turn when the store clerk contacted the police, resulting in a confrontation between the enraged customer and two police officers. A 13-second video capturing the incident circulated online, showing the restrained customer sitting cross-legged and handcuffed outside the 7-11, blood streaming from his face. Netizens raised concerns about how two police officers were able to control such a large, powerful, and unruly individual. Later, images surfaced allegedly depicting police officers delivering multiple blows to the subdued individual’s head with batons, triggering allegations of excessive force.
Initially, the two police officers at the scene were praised for their bravery in subduing the man, later identified as a local bodybuilder. However, the incident has sparked controversy surrounding police conduct and the use of force. Taoyuan Police Commissioner Wu Kun-hsu addressed the situation, stating that the hard work of police officers at the grassroots level should be encouraged if done well, and reviewed if not.
