18-1-2024 (CALIFORNIA) Sheryl Sandberg, formerly Meta’s Chief Operating Officer, made an announcement on Wednesday, stating that she will be stepping down from the company’s board of directors in May.
Sandberg’s departure as Meta’s COO occurred in June 2022, marking a significant shift in the company’s leadership. While she remained on the board of directors, her upcoming departure from that role signals a further transition. Sandberg revealed in a Facebook post that she will continue to serve as an advisor to the company.
Expressing her gratitude towards her colleagues at Meta, Sandberg stated her belief that the company is well-positioned to operate without her. In her post, she acknowledged the opportunity she had to serve as Facebook’s and then Meta’s COO for over 14 years, as well as being a board member for 12 years.
Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, commented on Sandberg’s post, expressing his appreciation for her exceptional contributions to the company and community. He acknowledged her dedication and guidance, emphasizing her instrumental role in driving Meta’s success. Zuckerberg also expressed his anticipation for their continued collaboration in the next chapter.
Sandberg’s tenure at Meta leaves behind a complex legacy. She played a key role in navigating the company through various controversies. These include the improper sharing of user data with Cambridge Analytica, an aggressive lobbying campaign in Washington, and scrutiny over the “Facebook papers,” which revealed the company’s involvement in the January 6, 2021, insurrection.
Beyond her corporate responsibilities, Sandberg is known for her advocacy for women in the workplace and her discussions on grief. During her time at Meta, she was often regarded as the “adult in the room,” providing a steady presence while Zuckerberg was still in his twenties.
