23-1-2024 (PHNOM PENH) Former BigBang member Seungri, who was released from prison last year, has been making headlines with his activities across Southeast Asia. From mingling with celebrities in Singapore during the F1 weekend to engaging in controversial encounters in Bali, Seungri’s latest venture took him to Cambodia, where he hosted a fan meeting at a craft brewery.
Videos from the event capture the 33-year-old addressing the audience with enthusiasm. Seungri shared that initially, his friends were apprehensive about his visit due to the country’s reputed dangers, but he now considers Cambodia “the greatest country in Asia.”
While some attendees found amusement in Seungri’s remarks, a netizen commented, “The only thing that’s dangerous is your damn self, bro.” Others referenced the “Burning Sun scandal” in comments on TikTok videos from the event, expressing concerns that Seungri might create a “Burning Sun club II” in Cambodia.
Seungri co-founded the Burning Sun nightclub in Seoul, which faced severe allegations of sex crimes, including drugging and trafficking women, including minors, to high-profile individuals. The club was also accused of distributing non-consensual sex videos in chat rooms. Seungri was convicted of abetting prostitution and embezzlement, receiving a three-year prison sentence, later reduced to 18 months.
Despite leaving the K-pop group BigBang in 2019 amidst controversies, a video from Seungri’s recent event in Cambodia reveals him claiming he will bring his former band member G-Dragon to the country someday.
South Korean netizens, however, expressed disdain for Seungri’s activities abroad. Comments on the anonymous forum Theqoo revealed anger and criticism, with one stating, “Since he can’t work in South Korea, he goes to Southeast Asia to make money. Why are you accepting it?” Another commenter emphasized, “There are limits to being shameless.”
While some doubted G-Dragon’s willingness to associate with Seungri post-conviction, fans defended their friendship, asserting that their bond remained intact.
