12-10-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) The Selangor police force is taking a strong stance against misconduct and disciplinary issues in the wake of a viral video that showed a suspected drug distributor allegedly being beaten in police custody in Klang.
Commissioner Datuk Hussein Omar Khan made it clear that there would be no tolerance for such behavior, and stern action would be taken against any personnel found guilty of misconduct or criminal offenses.
“We will not sit idly by or turn a blind eye to this problem, and we will not hesitate to take decisive action against those responsible,” he affirmed.
Between January and September this year, the Selangor police have initiated disciplinary actions against 319 personnel, comprising 19 officers and 300 rank and file members. Additionally, 47 personnel, including two officers, faced legal action for various criminal offenses.
Integrity-related offenses were predominant this year, with 14 officers and 203 rank and file members involved in disciplinary matters. While the number of misconduct cases within the state’s 15,000-strong police force is relatively low, the police chief emphasized that they would not evade the issue or protect wrongdoers.
The South Klang police issued a statement after being alerted to the viral video of the alleged incident. According to their findings, the incident took place on August 2 at the South Klang police headquarters’ Narcotic Crime Investigation Department (NCID) office around 10:30 am. Inspector Azrin Yazid filed an arrest report, and an investigation paper was initiated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act for drug trafficking.
The suspect was subsequently charged with the offense at the Klang court on August 8. South Klang OCPD Assistant Commissioner Cha Hoong Fong pledged a serious and transparent investigation into the misconduct depicted in the video.
The police are determined not to compromise on maintaining the rule of law, and ACP Cha appealed to all parties not to speculate on the matter while the investigation is ongoing.
