27-5-2023 (SINGAPORE) Despite their best efforts, the search and rescue team seeking the missing Singaporean climber on Mount Everest has been unable to locate him, according to a social media post by his wife on Saturday (May 27).
In an emotional Instagram tribute, the wife of 39-year-old climber Shrinivas Sainis Dattatraya expressed her sorrow over his disappearance after reaching the summit on May 19.
Shrinivas had departed Singapore on April 1 with the aim of conquering both Mount Everest and Mount Lhotse in a single expedition, as shared by Ms. Sushma Soma.
“He would have been one of the few individuals in Southeast Asia and the first Singaporean Indian to achieve such a feat,” she said.
Ms. Soma revealed that Shrinivas had developed High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE), a severe altitude sickness that can cause fatigue and loss of coordination, preventing him from descending successfully.
Recalling her husband’s unwavering focus, dedication, and disciplined approach in balancing his training and work commitments, Ms. Soma wrote, “Only a few dare to dream the way he did. Having conquered increasingly higher mountains each year, including the formidable 8,163-meter Manaslu (the world’s eighth-highest mountain), Shri fully understood the magnitude of such dreams.”
Accompanying her heartfelt words were photographs of Shrinivas at various peaks, such as Manaslu, Lenin Peak, and Mera Peak.
In one caption, Ms. Soma quoted Shrinivas, saying, “But in the end, the mountain has the last say.” She expressed gratitude towards everyone involved in the search, particularly his guide Dendi Sherpa, who she referred to as “his trusted companion through all the formidable Himalayan mountains.”
She extended her thanks to friends, family, the Sherpas from the seven summits, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and others who supported them during this difficult time.
“He explored the depths of the sea and conquered Earth’s greatest heights. And now, Shri is in the mountains – where he felt most at home,” Ms. Soma concluded, honoring her late husband’s adventurous spirit and love for the mountains.
