23-11-2023 (BEIJING) Kerryn Lee, known as Kerrynlee on TikTok, recently provided her Chinese friend with a delectable introduction to Singaporean cuisine at the renowned Xing Yi Hui restaurant in Beijing, also known as City Garden.
In a TikTok clip, Kerryn documented their culinary journey, showcasing a delightful array of Singaporean dishes. The experience began with free prawn crackers as appetisers, setting the stage for a feast focused solely on Singaporean cuisine.
Despite Thai dishes being on the menu, Kerryn and her friend were determined to explore the flavours of Singapore. The meal commenced with a slightly unexpected twist as the four sticks of satay, priced at 33 yuan ($6.19), lacked the traditional peanut sauce, leaving Kerryn somewhat disappointed. While taste-wise the satay was decent, Kerryn remarked on the dryness of the skewers.
Undeterred, the duo moved on to more promising delights. Kaya toast, featuring sweet coconut jam and butter between toasted bread, proved to be a hit. Kerryn’s friend, savoring her first taste of kaya toast, described it as “quite nice” for breakfast.
Next on the culinary adventure was laksa, a dish that Kerryn playfully referred to as curry laksa, subtly introducing a touch of Penang pride. Her friend found the coconut broth of the laksa enjoyable, noting its lack of spiciness.
The highlight of the meal, however, was bak kut teh, a dish consisting of pork ribs simmered in a flavorful broth of herbs and spices. Kerryn’s friend praised the dish for its robust pepper taste, describing the experience as warm and nutritious.
The satisfying meal for two came to a reasonable total of 180 yuan. Kerryn, having sampled Singaporean cuisine in Beijing, shared her newfound appreciation, understanding why there are “so many” Chinese tourists in Singapore. Her advice to locals: do not take the culinary treasures for granted.
