30-7-2023 (SAN FRANCISCO) The city of San Francisco is taking action in response to the installation of a massive “X” sign atop the downtown building, formerly known as the Twitter headquarters, as part of Elon Musk’s ongoing rebranding efforts for the social media platform.
City officials have opened a complaint and launched an investigation into the sign’s placement, citing concerns about the lack of proper permits for such alterations to buildings. Whether it involves replacing letters or symbols on structures or adding new signage, a permit is required to ensure compliance with design standards and safety regulations.
The appearance of the “X” came after San Francisco police intervened earlier in the week when workers attempted to remove Twitter’s iconic blue bird and logo from the building’s side. Authorities halted the removal process, citing safety issues, as the sidewalk had not been appropriately cordoned off to protect pedestrians from potential falling debris.
Patrick Hannan, spokesperson for the Department of Building Inspection, emphasized the necessity of obtaining permits for changes of this nature, stating, “Any replacement letters or symbols would require a permit to ensure consistency with the historic nature of the building and to make sure additions are safely attached to the sign.” Additionally, he emphasized that erecting a sign on top of a building is also subject to the same permit requirements.
“In light of this situation, the city is opening a complaint and initiating an investigation,” Hannan stated in an email.
Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter after its acquisition for a staggering $44 billion last year, has been actively reshaping the platform with his unique vision. He unveiled a new “X” logo to replace the traditional blue bird as the symbol for Twitter. The “X” has already made its appearance on the desktop version of the platform.
This fascination with the letter “X” is not new for Musk, who previously renamed Twitter’s corporate entity to “X Corp.” following the acquisition. He has a personal affinity for the letter, as evidenced by one of his children being named “X.” The child’s actual name comprises a combination of letters and symbols.
