17-12-2024 (MOSCOW) General Igor Kirillov, who commanded Russia’s nuclear, biological and chemical protection forces, has been killed in a bomb attack in Moscow, according to official statements from Russian authorities.
The fatal incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday when an explosive device detonated near a residential complex in the Russian capital. The blast also claimed the life of Kirillov’s aide, the Russian Investigative Committee confirmed in their report.
The timing of the attack has raised eyebrows, coming just hours after a Ukrainian court handed down a conviction against Kirillov in absentia. The court’s ruling pertained to allegations of deploying prohibited chemical weapons during Russia’s ongoing military campaign in Ukraine, which began in February 2022.
Kirillov’s death marks one of the most significant casualties among Russia’s senior military leadership since the commencement of what Moscow terms its “special military operation” in Ukraine. The operation, now approaching its third year, has resulted in Russian forces maintaining control over approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory, with incremental advances being made despite fierce resistance.
