28-7-2024 (BANGKOK) The Royal Thai Army has released its much-anticipated 2024 white paper, detailing a comprehensive plan for military procurement aimed at bolstering the nation’s defence capabilities over the next three years. The document, made public on Sunday, outlines a broad spectrum of weaponry and equipment deemed essential for addressing Thailand’s evolving security landscape.
At the forefront of the army’s procurement strategy is the acquisition of armed drones, a move that signals Thailand’s intent to modernise its forces in line with global military trends. The white paper argues that such advanced technology is crucial for defending the nation against a wide array of potential threats.
While specific details and quantities remain undisclosed, the document provides a general overview of the military’s shopping list. In addition to armed drones, the army has expressed interest in acquiring attack helicopters, tanks, and wheeled armoured vehicles, indicating a focus on enhancing both air and ground combat capabilities.
The white paper also emphasises the importance of improving surveillance and intelligence-gathering capabilities. To this end, the army is seeking patrol helicopters, transport aircraft, defence radar systems, and territorial monitoring equipment. Furthermore, there is a stated need for upgrading intelligence and communication systems, underlining the growing importance of information warfare in modern military strategy.
Army Chief General Charoenchai Hinthao explained that the white paper’s release was intended to foster public understanding of the army’s roles and its development framework. He emphasised that the proposed acquisitions were based on a thorough assessment of potential challenges facing Thailand from the present day through to 2027.
